Frederick Douglass’s narrative takes us to a journey where literacy played an important role in changing the norms of life. Douglass was first introduced to the world of words by his wife. Initially he viewed literacy as a curse (Douglass 35). From then, he started realizing that it is not impossible for him to do what he thinks. Literacy took him to self-improvement that later led him to make himself free by expanding his boundaries. When he started learning new things, it turned out to be a threat for his master.
